Remote Area First Aid Course Outline
Course Aim
To provide participants with the basic skills and knowledge to deliver effective casualty management for a range of injuries and illnesses in the remote area situation.
Course Objective
This training is suitable for individuals, companies and organizations, and will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to make them confident and competent to provide effective first aid management to a casualty in their care for up to 72 hours.
Prerequisites
- This course is recommended for currently qualified first aid certificate holders (Lvl 2).
- Minimum age of 16 years is recommended
Learning Outcomes
- Define the principles of first aid, with emphasis on the remote area situation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic human anatomy.
- Demonstrate casualty examination using advanced first aid assessment techniques, with emphasis on deteriorating conditions.
- Demonstrate the performance of effective CPR and expired air resuscitation.
- Identify, and provide first aid management for, a range of common illnesses and injuries.
- Identify, and provide first aid management for, a range of injuries and illnesses more likely to be encountered in the remote area situation.
- Discuss and demonstrate evacuation planning principles.
- Demonstrate casualty handling using a variety of resources, including; improvised
- Stretchers, rescue stretchers, and other selected equipment.
- Demonstrate organization of the helicopter evacuation of a casualty, including selection and marking of a helicopter landing site (day and night).

- Three years. Annual refreshers recommended.

Other
- Training consists of night and day practical exercises in sometimes, difficult country.
- Participants are required to wear appropriate clothing for the practical scenarios, including wet weather gear as dictated by the existing conditions.
